Genome-wide association study (GWAS) of schizophrenia in Tamil Nadu, India

We have analysed > 300,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a collection of schizophrenia families from Tamil Nadu, India. No genome-wide significant findings were identified, but there are several suggestive disease associations (P<1×10-5) that are worthy of further investigation. We will genotype these top SNPs in the ICC sample (see above) to determine if there are any replicates (an essential condition for assessing the significance of genetic associations in contemporary studies). We will also screen the ICC samples for a number of rare copy number variants (CNVs) that are known to be associated with large effect size in Europeans, and that were identified in one or more individuals in our GWAS cohort. This will be the first major study of CNVs for schizophrenia in an Indian population.
