Established in 1987, QCMHR is Queensland’s premier mental health research organisation with a vision to reduce the impact of mental illness in our communities.
QCMHR is an academic health partnership between Queensland Health and The University of Queensland. Hosted by West Moreton Health, QCMHR is funded by Queensland Health to contribute to the Queensland, Australian and global mental health research effort.

Our world-renowned experts are working diligently from every angle to create new knowledge about mental health, and how to reduce the level of disability associated with mental illness. Our research seeks to understand the causes of and contributors to mental disorders, to quantify the prevalence and burden of mental disorders, to conduct clinical trials of new treatments, and to create new knowledge about optimal interventions to prevent and treat mental disorders and associated conditions.

Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research (QCMHR) researchers were tapped on the shoulder by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, to join their global COVID-19 Forecasting team. Led by Dr Alize Ferrari, QCMHR researchers completed the COVID-19 forecasting work for select locations in the Asia Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand. Their world-first study found cases of major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders increased by more than 25 percent worldwide.
